Arabic version: وفاة مأساوية تحدث خارج مرفق استهلاك المخدرات في غلاسكو
A man has died outside The Thistle, Glasgow’s drug consumption facility, prompting police to seal off the entrance. The incident was reported at about 10:20 on Sunday morning, and authorities indicated that there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal for further investigation.
The Thistle, which opened in January 2025, is the first safer drug consumption facility in the UK. It allows individuals to inject heroin or cocaine under medical supervision without the risk of prosecution. The facility is managed by the Glasgow City Integration Joint Board, a collaboration between the city council and Glasgow’s health board.
The facility is currently operating under a three-year pilot program and registered 575 users in its first year. A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council stated, “We are assisting police with their inquiries and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.” According to BBC News, the facility aims to provide a safer environment for drug users while addressing public health concerns.
