Network Rail has warned that disruption between London and Bedford is expected to continue until Thursday following a fatal train crash, which it described as a “tragic, isolated incident.” A train driver was killed and about 100 people were injured when two East Midlands Railway (EMR) services to London St Pancras collided at about 17:15 BST on Friday near Bedford.
According to BBC News, 28 individuals remain hospitalized, with nine in critical condition following the crash. This collision involved two East Midlands Railway (EMR) services en route to London St Pancras that collided around 17:15 BST on Friday.
In light of the incident, all EMR services to and from London St Pancras were suspended over the weekend. Thameslink has urged passengers to travel only if essential. EMR stated that pre-planned engineering work meant all lines between Bedford and London St Pancras were already closed on Saturday and Sunday.
From Monday to Thursday, limited services will operate, with only one train per hour running between Sheffield and Bedford, Nottingham and Bedford, and Kettering and Corby. However, there will be no train services south of Bedford.
The British Transport Police declared the crash a major incident. Passengers described the experience as bewildering and frightening, with reports of chaos and injuries. One passenger recounted fearing an explosion after the impact, while another described the scene as resembling a bomb explosion, with bloodied faces and severe injuries visible among fellow passengers.
