The Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in the United Kingdom has sought to clarify its position following a government-imposed ban on Israeli students. This decision, made by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in response to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, has raised concerns internally about the college’s reputation as an inclusive institution. According to Al Jazeera, emails obtained by the outlet reveal discussions among college leadership regarding the potential fallout from the ban.

The MOD announced the ban in September 2025 after Israel unveiled plans to launch a major ground assault on Gaza City. The decision received widespread media coverage and condemnation of Israel’s escalation of the war. Internal correspondence at the RCDS indicated a desire among leadership to ensure that the college’s role in the decision was clearly communicated to the public.

RCDS commandant George Norton reached out to a senior military official to assist in shaping the narrative, emphasizing that the college does not select participants for its courses, which is a matter of government-to-government policy. Norton expressed concern that media portrayals might inaccurately suggest that the RCDS was responsible for the ban.

Deputy commandant Tamara Jennings highlighted the importance of the college’s reputation for diversity and engagement, stating that narratives suggesting a ban were detrimental. The RCDS has not officially commented on the situation, and the MOD has stated that decisions regarding military education are made on a case-by-case basis.

The ban has occurred during a period of strained relations between the UK and Israel, with more than 72,000 Palestinians reported killed in Gaza since the onset of the conflict. Reports indicate that fewer than five Israeli military personnel are currently enrolled in UK military-related academic courses.
