Emotions ran high as Australians gathered to remember Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old girl allegedly murdered in the Australian Outback. Vigils took place in major cities including Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, as well as smaller towns across the nation.

According to BBC News, Kumanjayi’s mother expressed her heartbreak during a candle-lit vigil in Alice Springs, where she described her daughter as a “little princess” who loved the color pink and enjoyed playing games like Minecraft. Her body was discovered on April 30, just days after she went missing from the Old Timers Camp.

The community has responded with an outpouring of grief, leaving tributes of flowers, toys, and heartfelt messages at the site where Kumanjayi was last seen. Vigils featured speeches from Indigenous community members, including a poignant poem read by 16-year-old Alinta Quayle in Sydney.

Following the tragic incident, three child protection workers were stood down as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kumanjayi’s disappearance. Family members have called for calm and respect as they navigate this period of mourning, known as “sorry business” within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
