The Western Australia government has unveiled a substantial budget for 2026, emphasizing housing, health, and infrastructure while forecasting a surplus of $2.4 billion. According to ABC News, the budget includes a $100 payment for every driver’s licence holder, aimed at alleviating rising fuel costs.
Premier Roger Cook highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing cost-of-living pressures, despite ongoing economic challenges. The budget introduces various measures, including ongoing student assistance payments and free public transport on Sundays, alongside an extension of the rent relief program.
Housing remains a critical issue, with median house prices in Perth exceeding $1 million. The budget proposes stamp duty exemptions and a $1 billion infrastructure fund to support new land developments. Additionally, the government aims to construct 34,000 homes over the next eight years, with $4.7 billion allocated for housing initiatives.
However, the budget also includes cuts, with plans to eliminate 1,500 public service jobs to save $445 million over four years. Treasurer Rita Saffioti confirmed that cuts would not affect frontline services like healthcare and education. The health sector is set to receive a historic funding boost of $9.1 billion over four years, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and services.
Despite the positive outlook, the government acknowledges potential economic headwinds due to global uncertainties. The Premier remains optimistic about WA’s economic resilience, focusing on diversifying the economy and strengthening its position as a leading state in Australia.
