An alleged gunman who has been on the run in Tasmania for two weeks may have changed the colour and number plates of his 4WD.

Police have been searching for Robert George Greig, 33, since an incident in which two police cars were fired upon near New Norfolk on the night of September 26.

A police car containing two officers was hit with multiple bullets as it travelled to an alleged domestic violence incident, before gunshots were fired at a second police car on its way to the scene. No one was injured.

Several houses and properties have been searched as part of a large-scale effort in the state’s south.

Tasmania Police on Monday said a “specific line of inquiry” was being followed.

Members of the public have been urged not to approach Mr Greig, or the Holden Colorado, registration YD08IP, he was believed to be driving.

“Police believe the Colorado, which was blue, may now be a different colour and displaying different number plates,” Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said.

“However, the vehicle would have distinctive damage to its passenger side.”

CCTV footage has revealed at least one other car was in the area on the night of the shooting. Police believe the occupants may have seen the 4WD driving erratically.

“Police would like to speak to the driver of any vehicle that was on either Glenora Road or Montagu Street between Glenfern and New Norfolk around 11.50pm,” Det Insp Morrisby said.

“I urge anyone who is helping Mr Greig avoid police to come forward. We want this situation to end safely for everyone concerned.”
