A vigil was held for 19-year-old Isla Bell in Melbourne following the decision to drop murder and manslaughter charges against the man accused of her death. Hundreds gathered in the city’s CBD, holding photos of Bell as her family and friends expressed their grief and frustration at the legal outcome.

According to ABC News, the rally took place just days after prosecutors announced that the manslaughter charge against Marat Ganiev had been discontinued due to insufficient evidence. Ganiev, 55, was last known to have seen Bell alive at his St Kilda East home, six weeks before her remains were discovered at a tip in November 2024.

The Office of Public Prosecutions stated that there were “no reasonable prospects of conviction” against Ganiev, who still faces charges related to attempting to pervert the course of justice. His associate, Eyal Yaffe, accused of moving Bell’s body, was recently released from the Supreme Court.

At the vigil, Bell’s mother, Justine Spokes, addressed the crowd, sharing her devastation over the dropped charges. She emphasized the need for trauma-informed media legislation regarding gendered violence, advocating for reforms to prevent victim-blaming narratives.

Friends from Bell’s childhood also attended, recalling her vibrant personality and artistic talents. They expressed disappointment over the legal system’s handling of the case, with one friend noting that the outcome had shaken her trust in justice. The rally served as a poignant reminder of the impact Bell had on those around her and the ongoing call for justice.
