One people died and at least 33 people were injured on Sunday when a truck rammed into a bus stop in Ramat Hasharon, central Israel.

Police said that the suspect was “shot and neutralised” at the scene, though they did not specify whether the incident was considered an attack. 

The driver also hit a bus that had stopped to drop off passengers, police said in a statement.

The Magen David Adom emergency service said at least 16 people were transported to nearby hospitals.

One of those hurt died later of his injuries, according to the hospital where he was taken.

Al Jazeera noted that the Glilot military base in Ramat Hasharon also houses the Mossad headquarters.

Israeli media identified the suspected perpetrator as Rami Nasrallah Natour, an Israeli citizen from the city of Kalansua in central Israel. He was shot dead by security forces at the scene.

Israel has faced sporadic attacks since launching its war on Gaza in October 2023, following the 7 October Hamas attack in southern Israel that left approximately 1,200 dead.

Ceremonies were scheduled for Sunday to mark the anniversary of the 7 October attack according to the Hebrew calendar.

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir arrived at the scene of the incident on Sunday.

In footage shared on social media, he was seen hugging a man who called for the “deportation” of the suspect’s family.
