St Charbel’s Monastery in Punchbowl, the heart of Australia’s largest Catholic parish, is preparing to welcome more than 50,000 people for its annual “A Saint in the Neighbourhood” festival.
Running from Wednesday 8 October to Saturday 11 October, the four-day event will transform the monastery grounds into a hub of light, food, and festivity, drawing families and visitors from across Sydney and beyond.
Now in its second year, the festival has quickly become one of the region’s most popular community celebrations. Each night features an immersive light show projected across the monastery and church façade, bringing to life the story of St Charbel in a visually stunning way. The program is complemented by a bustling line-up of food trucks and markets, offering visitors a space to connect, enjoy, and celebrate together.
Fr Anthony El-Kazzi LMO, a priest at St Charbel’s, said the event was designed to welcome people from all walks of life.
“This festival is more than just an artistic celebration, it is an opportunity to bring people together from all faiths and backgrounds, to share in beauty, culture, and community spirit. St Charbel’s legacy of humility and service speaks to everyone, and this event provides a space for families, neighbours, and visitors to gather in unity and hope,” Fr El-Kazzi said.
With tens of thousands expected to attend, the festival reflects the strong sense of belonging that has grown around St Charbel’s Parish since its founding more than 50 years ago. Beyond its religious roots, the event offers a celebration of community identity, hospitality, and cultural diversity, making it a highlight of the Western Sydney calendar.
The light show, created using advanced projection mapping technology, transforms the monastery and bell tower into a living canvas. Coupled with music and narration, it offers audiences an immersive experience that captures the imagination of all ages. Meanwhile, the food trucks and markets provide an energetic atmosphere for friends and families to enjoy meals together, discover local goods, and share in the festive spirit.
Fr El-Kazzi said the event’s success lies in its ability to bring people together:
“What makes this festival special is the way it unites people. It’s about creating a place where everyone feels welcome, where families can enjoy time together, and where the community can experience something uplifting.”
