Spread the love

Dear community,

As we look ahead to the start of Ramadan next week, I’m delighted to share that Lakemba Nights during Ramadan will return from Thursday 19 February through to Sunday 15 March, transforming Haldon Street into a celebration of culture, community spirit and incredible food.

Last year, a record-breaking average of over 50,000 people visited each night, highlighting not only the scale of this event, but the strength of our City’s diversity. I’ve watched this street festival grow from humble beginnings into an event that is known across Australia and beyond. Whatever its size, one thing stays the same – the shared joy these evenings bring to so many people.

What makes Ramadan so special is not just the nightly breaking of the fast – the Iftar – but the values that underpin the month: reflection, gratitude, charity and unity.

This year’s program builds on everything people love. Almost 60 businesses and community stallholders will bring a world of flavours to Lakemba – from cherished favourites like camel burgers, warm knafeh and flaming paan leaves, to exciting new additions including basque cheesecake and seafood paella. I will also be attending an Iftar Dinner on Thursday 5 March, followed by public Tarawih prayers.

What I find most inspiring each year is seeing families, friends, neighbours and visitors from across Australia and even around the world, come together on our streets. Where else can you walk a single stretch of road and encounter cultures and cuisines from Lebanon, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Cocos Malay Islands and so many more? It is a living reminder of what makes Canterbury Bankstown extraordinary.

Whether you’re a regular visitor, returning after many years or visiting for the very first time, I hope you take the opportunity to experience the sights, tastes and traditions that make Lakemba Nights a truly iconic moment in our City’s calendar. To find out more, visit cb.city/LakembaNights2026
