Prosecutors in New South Wales are considering reopening the cold case of Cheryl Grimmer, a British girl who disappeared from Fairy Meadow beach in Wollongong more than 55 years ago. The decision comes after the girl’s family expressed their desire for a renewed investigation into her disappearance, which occurred in January 1970. Despite extensive searches at the time, no leads were found.

In 2017, a suspect was charged with Cheryl’s abduction and murder, but the case collapsed when his confession was deemed inadmissible. He continues to deny any wrongdoing, and prosecutors subsequently dropped the charges. Following public pressure, including appeals from Cheryl’s family, the New South Wales director of public prosecutions has agreed to review the case.

Sally Dowling, the director, acknowledged in a letter to Grimmer’s family that while the normal time limit for requesting a review had passed, she would still consider the case based on evidence provided by police in 2019. The family has expressed their gratitude for this decision, emphasizing their ongoing fight for justice for Cheryl.

Ricki Nash, Cheryl’s older brother, stated that they had previously urged NSW Police to reopen the investigation, citing new evidence that has emerged since 2019. He highlighted the importance of transparency in the process, stating, “When transparency leads the process, evil can no longer hide behind process failures or bureaucratic division.”

Cheryl’s disappearance remains a painful memory for her family, who have been advocating for a fresh investigation since the initial trial collapsed. In addition to the review, a parliamentary inquiry in May will examine unsolved murders and long-term missing persons cases, including Cheryl’s, further emphasizing the ongoing quest for justice.

According to BBC News, the family hopes that renewed attention to the case will finally bring answers and closure after decades of uncertainty.
