Members of the Muslim community in Ballarat are grappling with trauma following a violent incident during a community dinner. A man, who declared himself as far right, allegedly stormed into an Iftar dinner on Sunday, unleashing racial slurs and physical aggression towards attendees.

According to ABC News, Usman, a community member, reported that his daughters are now too frightened to sleep in their own beds after witnessing the attack. The incident occurred at a community center in the Alfredton suburb, where families had gathered to celebrate Ramadan.

The assailant reportedly shouted threats and racial insults, targeting children and parents alike. Usman described the chaos as children ran outside in tears, prompting him to rush back to the hall to assess the situation. Despite the seriousness of the attack, Victoria Police did not arrest the man, instead instructing him to move on.

Community leaders and local politicians have condemned the incident, with a petition circulating to demand a thorough investigation and legal action against the attacker. Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, emphasized that every Australian Muslim deserves to feel safe in their community.

The incident has sparked discussions about the increasing prevalence of anti-Muslim rhetoric and online hate speech, with local leaders calling for a collective effort to combat such behavior. Suzanne Ryan-Evers, CEO of the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council, expressed concern over the growing frequency of these attacks, linking them to a broader trend of online racism fueling real-world violence.
