Bill Kerr, an 86-year-old former member of the New South Wales Police Special Branch, has been honored with a special badge by the nursing home in Central West NSW where he resides. This recognition celebrates his significant contributions to the safety of world leaders during their visits to Australia. According to ABC News, Kerr’s role often placed him in close proximity to dignitaries, a unique aspect of his job that set him apart from typical police officers.

Kerr’s family reflected on his career, noting that it was not unusual for them to see him alongside prominent figures. His son, Darren, remarked on their naivety regarding the dangers his father faced, as they often spotted him in the background of news articles or television broadcasts, dressed in sunglasses while world leaders took center stage.

One notable incident in Kerr’s career occurred in 1978 when he was part of the team that ensured the safety of the President of Singapore after a bomb exploded outside the Hilton Hotel in Sydney. The explosion, caused by a bomb hidden in a garbage bin, prompted a swift evacuation, showcasing Kerr’s critical role in protecting high-profile individuals.

The nursing home, where Kerr now lives with his wife Janice, aims to challenge misconceptions about aged care. Head chef Seona Johnson highlighted the importance of recognizing the rich life stories of residents like Kerr, emphasizing that their lives continue to evolve in new ways.

Kerr’s legacy is further commemorated by a medal he received from the police in 2017, which is currently displayed in a museum in Canberra. Despite the high-stakes nature of his previous profession, Darren Kerr described his father as a supportive and proud family man, dedicated to fostering happiness and success in his children’s lives.
