Thousands gathered at Mernda railway station to honour Aidan Becker, a 22-year-old who died trying to protect a teenage boy from an alleged robbery and assault. The vigil took place one week after Becker’s tragic death, which occurred during an incident involving four males aged between 16 and 18, who have been charged over Mr Becker’s death.

According to ABC News, Becker’s mother, Natalie, expressed her family’s deep pain during the emotional gathering. “We stand here tonight as a family broken,” she stated, highlighting the love and support they have received from the community. She reflected on her son’s character, saying he would have acted heroically again if given the chance.

The vigil featured heartfelt tributes, including a display of a North Melbourne AFL guernsey and jumpers from local clubs Becker had played for. Attendees wore blue and white, in honour of his favourite football team, and observed a minute’s silence to remember him. Becker was remembered as a compassionate individual who was always looking out for others.

The family of the 14-year-old boy Becker tried to save issued a statement expressing their sorrow over his loss. They praised Becker’s bravery and compassion, stating that their family would forever cherish his memory. “We hold your family in our thoughts and prayers,” they added.

Organisers of the vigil emphasised the importance of community and unity during this difficult time, as they came together to reflect on Becker’s life and legacy.
