According to France 24, Algeria has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates after saying all means to preserve bilateral ties had been exhausted. Algerian state media reported the decision on Thursday.

In a foreign ministry statement, Algeria accused the UAE of “provocative and hostile acts” but did not provide details. The ministry said Algeria had repeatedly sought to alert and warn the Emirati side about the consequences of what it called regrettable and unjustified conduct.

Algiers said the UAE ambassador to Algeria had been given 48 hours to comply with the decision. Shortly after the announcement, Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, wrote on X that diplomatic relations should rest on “rationality, communication and clarity of interests” rather than “riddles and signals that require decoding”.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has previously accused the Gulf state of meddling in Algeria’s internal affairs and seeking to destabilise countries in the region. Last year, he described Algeria’s ties with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar as “brotherly”, while referring to another Gulf country without naming it.

Tensions had already increased in February, when Algeria began cancelling an air services agreement with the UAE signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013. Algeria and the UAE have also differed over diplomatic policies, including the UAE’s normalisation of relations with Israel in 2020.
