A Fijian cruise ship, the Fiji Princess, has run aground near Monuriki Island, famously known as the filming location for the movie ‘Cast Away.’ According to ABC News, the incident occurred while the vessel was on a seven-day cruise.
The ship hit a reef on Saturday, prompting a response from the Fiji Navy. All 30 passengers aboard were safely rescued and returned to Port Denarau on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. Reports indicate that about 30 crew members remained on the ship, which is still stuck on the reef.
Videos circulating on social media show the 55-metre ship grounded near the island. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among those on board. Blue Lagoon Cruises, the operator of the vessel, has not yet issued a comment regarding the incident.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is currently preparing a report on the grounding, while efforts for the salvage and recovery of the Fiji Princess are underway.
