According to BBC News,

Four people have died off the coast of northern France after attempting to cross the English Channel, local authorities have said. The French authorities in Calais reported that a taxi boat sinking occurred today, and the situation is still being assessed, with updates expected as rescue efforts continue.

Rescue efforts are currently underway following the incident, which occurred off the coast of Boulogne, between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais. Emergency services arrived at the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST) to care for around 30 people, as reported by local media.

In recent weeks, the weather in the Channel has been calm, which typically leads to an increase in crossing attempts during the summer months. However, the number of crossings this year has shown a decline compared to the same period last year. Between January 1 and March 26, 2026, a total of 4,441 people crossed the Channel by small boat, marking a 33% decrease from the 6,642 crossings recorded during the same timeframe in 2025.

The increase in crossings over the past three years has been notable, with 41,472 people arriving in the UK by small boat in 2025. The changing weather conditions have played a significant role in the fluctuations of these numbers, with rougher conditions in the Channel contributing to the decrease seen early this year.

A press conference is expected to be held shortly to provide further details regarding the incident and ongoing rescue efforts. This tragic event highlights the ongoing risks faced by individuals attempting to make perilous crossings in search of safety and a better life.
