Treasurer Jim Chalmers emphasized that ensuring young Australians have access to the housing market is “driving deliberations” about possible changes to taxes. According to ABC News, Chalmers stated that the federal government is looking into changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount as part of the upcoming budget considerations.
Chalmers noted that the government is aware of intergenerational unfairness present in the current tax system, particularly in relation to housing. He remarked that these issues are influencing the government’s approach to the budget, which is set to be released in just under two weeks.
The Treasurer indicated that while changes to tax settings are being considered, they may not significantly increase government revenue. He assured that the government is being transparent about these discussions as they work towards a solution that will assist younger Australians in entering the housing market.
Chalmers stressed the need for concrete measures that will facilitate access to housing for young people, stating that this is a priority as the government finalizes its budget plans.
