Concerns are mounting over the future of the Yvonne Cuschieri House, a respite centre in Queanbeyan, as funding issues may leave the facility empty post-construction. According to ABC News, the centre is designed to cater to individuals aged 18 to 60 with terminal or chronic illnesses.

The six-bedroom facility is nearing completion, but the charity behind it, Respite Care for Queanbeyan, has struggled to secure an operator due to a lack of ongoing funding. Paul Walshe, who has been instrumental in the campaign, stated that without financial support, the centre cannot function as intended.

The federal government committed $1 million in 2022 for initial operations; however, this was not meant to cover long-term service costs. Walshe estimates that operational funding will range from $1.4 to $1.6 million annually, a figure that cannot be raised through community fundraising alone.

Local MPs Kristy McBain and Steve Whan are exploring potential funding sources, but current options for supporting the facility remain unclear. Whan noted that individuals with chronic or terminal illnesses often do not qualify for government programs like the NDIS, complicating the financial landscape for the centre’s operation.

Despite the uncertainty, Walshe and other advocates remain committed to realizing Yvonne Cuschieri’s vision for a dedicated respite facility, emphasizing its importance for families in similar situations to his own.
