Approximately 250 Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants, including children, are missing after their boat capsized in the Andaman Sea last week. According to BBC News, the vessel had departed from Bangladesh and was en route to Malaysia when it reportedly sank due to heavy winds, rough seas, and overcrowding.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard reported that they rescued nine individuals from the distressed boat on April 9, although the exact timing of the capsizing remains unclear. This incident underscores the desperate circumstances faced by many Rohingya fleeing ongoing violence and poor living conditions.

Since a violent crackdown in Myanmar in 2017, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh, where they continue to endure challenging living conditions. Many are now attempting perilous sea journeys in search of a better life, viewing Malaysia as a potential safe haven.

Rafiqul Islam, a survivor of the incident, recounted floating for nearly 36 hours before being rescued, suffering burns from spilled oil. The promise of employment in Malaysia motivated him to undertake the dangerous journey. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commented on the tragic incident, emphasizing the dire consequences of ongoing displacement and the lack of sustainable solutions for the Rohingya.

The UN agencies have called on the international community to provide sustained funding for Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh. They also highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of displacement in Myanmar to facilitate the safe return of refugees in the future.
