At the Denmark Youth Festival, children from Generation Alpha displayed a surprising fascination with vintage technology, engaging with items like an antique bellows camera and a 60-year-old typewriter. Ten-year-old Isabelle Elliott expressed her excitement while peering into the camera, reflecting on how technology has evolved over the years. “It’s technically things evolving from other things,” she said, highlighting the importance of understanding past innovations.

The Denmark Historical Society showcased various historical items, allowing children to experience technology from a different era. Isabelle, who has expressed a desire for a typewriter for Christmas, noted her thrill at typing on the antique device. Her mother, Emily Springate, emphasized the significance of connecting children with their past, stating, “For children to be connected with their past, and to understand that the technology that now exists in their hand all the time is not what we’ve always had … is really important.” According to ABC News, the event allowed local youth to appreciate how far technology has come.

Local historian Bev McGuinness observed the children’s reactions to the historical exhibits, noting their amazement at older technology, such as a rotary-dial telephone. Children were fascinated by the manual processes of the past, contrasting them with the instant communication of today. Shire of Denmark president Aaron Wiggins remarked on the tactile nature of the exhibits, stating that children enjoy the chance to engage physically with historical items. The festival also included fun activities like a dunk tank and face painting, making it a busy and enjoyable day for the community.

Overall, the Youth Festival served not only as entertainment but also as an educational opportunity, bridging the gap between generations and fostering an appreciation for the technological advancements that have shaped modern life.
