Arabic version: الولايات المتحدة تصادر سفينة إيرانية بالقرب من حصار هرمز، ترامب يؤكد

US President Donald Trump announced that United States forces have seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to breach the naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. According to Al Jazeera, the ship, identified as Touska, ignored warnings from a US Navy guided missile destroyer in the Gulf of Oman.

Trump stated that the ship’s crew did not comply with orders to stop, prompting the US Navy to take decisive action by blowing a hole in the engine room. He confirmed that US Marines are currently in custody of the ship and are investigating its contents.

This incident unfolds as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil shipments. Iranian officials have indicated that the strait will remain closed to other vessels unless the US lifts its blockade, which has been in effect since April 13.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, emphasized that it is impossible for other ships to navigate the strait while Iran faces restrictions. Following a brief period of increased maritime activity, reports of vessels coming under fire have led to a halt in transit attempts in the Gulf.

Trump’s announcement coincides with his plans for US negotiators to visit Islamabad for potential talks with Iran, aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts. However, Iranian state media reported that Tehran has not agreed to participate in further discussions, casting doubt on the prospects for a lasting ceasefire.
