Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe, two fathers who lost their daughters in a tragic incident in Southport, are preparing to run the London Marathon together, having formed a deep bond through their shared grief. According to BBC News, their daughters were killed in July 2024 during a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop, which has driven the fathers to honor their memories through running.
Both Aguiar and Stancombe participated in last year’s marathon separately, but this year they have decided to run as friends, reflecting on how their friendship has grown. David expressed that they wanted to support each other during the race, emphasizing their close connection. Sergio noted that running together has been significant for him, stating that David feels like a brother.
The fathers have utilized running as a form of therapy, helping them cope with their loss. Sergio mentioned that running has improved his mood on difficult days, while David shared that his motivation lies in honoring his daughter, Elsie. They are also supporting charitable causes related to their daughters, with Sergio having founded Alice’s WonderDance and David running for Elsie’s Story.
In addition to their marathon efforts, schools attended by Alice and Elsie will host a mini marathon in Southport, inspired by the fathers’ commitment. Both dads are proud of the positive impact running has had on their community and expressed their gratitude for the support they receive from each other’s families.
As they prepare for the marathon, both fathers acknowledge the emotional weight of the event but find comfort in their friendship and the memories of their daughters. David stated that he runs for Elsie, while Sergio carries Alice in his heart during every race. Together, they look forward to crossing the finish line, symbolizing their ongoing journey of remembrance and healing.
