A unique exhibition showcasing letters and photographs from the early days of the Beatles will open in Hamburg, highlighting a pivotal period in the band’s history. The display features correspondence that reveals the band’s feelings of newfound fame and includes the only existing letter penned by both Paul McCartney and John Lennon, addressed to McCartney’s brother, Mike.

According to The Guardian, the exhibition will run from 8 to 25 May and is part of Hamburg’s annual port festival, Hafengeburtstag. It focuses on the original five members of the band during their transformative years between 1960 and 1962, a time that significantly influenced their musical style and public image.

Mike McCartney, who contributed to the collection, expressed his fascination with the letters, stating that they unveil many secrets about the band’s development. The exhibition also features photographs taken by Stuart Sutcliffe, the band’s original bassist, who played a crucial role in shaping their early image before his untimely death at the age of 21.

The letters, sourced from various places including The Cavern Club and the Liverpool Beatles Museum, contain insights from Lennon, McCartney, George Harrison, and Sutcliffe. One letter from Pete Best recalls the excitement of being interviewed as Liverpool’s top band while boarding a plane, emphasizing the early stirrings of their celebrity status.

The exhibition promises to provide a reflective glimpse into the band’s rigorous schedule during their Hamburg days, where they performed extensively and honed their craft. Liverpool Combined Authority has indicated potential plans to bring the exhibition to Liverpool in the future, coinciding with a BBC series focused on the Beatles’ formative years.
