Super Netball’s recent round eight matches saw no changes to the ladder, but the handling of Pride Games sparked discussion. According to ABC News, the Melbourne Mavericks secured a crucial victory over the NSW Swifts, winning 62-60, which solidified their position in the finals race. Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast Lightning suffered a 58-54 defeat against the West Coast Fever, continuing a disappointing home record.
The round also featured a notable performance from the Queensland Firebirds, who lost 73-49 to the Adelaide Thunderbirds after a competitive first half. Despite being winless in 2026, the Giants put up a strong fight against the Melbourne Vixens, losing narrowly 66-64.
The ongoing discussion about the league’s approach to Pride Games has come to the forefront. While Pride Games have been a part of Super Netball for several seasons, critics argue that the league’s efforts have become diluted. This weekend, the Lightning’s Pride Game was marked by a lack of pre-game promotion and minimal coverage during the match.
Former player Liv Lewis highlighted the need for a dedicated Pride Round, suggesting that the league’s current approach feels uncertain and inconsistent. Lewis pointed out that only one openly gay athlete exists among the league’s 88 players, underscoring the need for greater visibility and support for the LGBTIQA+ community in Super Netball.
As clubs plan their Pride Games at different times throughout the season, the absence of a unified approach raises questions about the impact of these initiatives. Lewis emphasized that without focused attention, the messages surrounding inclusion and diversity risk being overshadowed by competing causes.
