UK police are investigating an arson incident at a former synagogue in east London, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer convenes community leaders and police chiefs to address a surge in antisemitic attacks. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that counter-terrorism officers are involved in the investigation following a fire that caused minor damage early on Tuesday.

According to ABC News, this incident follows a series of antisemitic attacks in the capital, including a stabbing of two Jewish men in the Golders Green area earlier this month. A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with that attack.

During the meeting at Downing Street, Starmer described the recent rise in antisemitism as a “crisis” and announced plans for new legislation aimed at combating such hate crimes. He emphasized that antisemitism stems from various extremist ideologies, including those from the far-left and far-right, as well as Islamist groups.

The Green Party, facing accusations of antisemitism, is under scrutiny as local elections approach. Labour Party leaders have criticized the Greens for alleged antisemitic comments made by some of their members, particularly in light of recent events. The Green Party denies these accusations and asserts that they do not support candidates making offensive remarks.

The situation is developing as the UK government seeks to address the rising threats against the Jewish community, with Starmer making it clear that violence and hatred will not be tolerated.
