The Canvas learning management software, utilized by educational facilities worldwide, was hacked on Saturday, May 2 (Australian time), impacting several Australian institutions. According to ABC News, TasTafe confirmed that a “criminal third party” accessed some of its data during the breach.

Educational institutions across Australia are currently investigating the extent of the data compromise. University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is collaborating with Canvas’s parent company, Instructure, to ascertain the specifics of the data breach and its potential impacts.

The University of Melbourne has acknowledged the cyber incident and is working closely with the vendor to manage the situation. Flinders University in Adelaide has also been informed that both student and staff data may have been impacted by the breach.

TasTAFE stated that while some personal information might have been accessed, there is no indication that passwords, dates of birth, or financial information were involved. Ross Smith, acting secretary of Tasmania’s Department for Education, Children and Young People, mentioned that they have not yet confirmed if any Tasmanian public school data has been obtained.

Instructure has engaged external cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident, and reassured that Canvas remains operational for affected institutions. RMIT University is also in the process of determining if any of its data was involved in the breach.
