Billie Eilish has opened up about her experiences with Tourette syndrome, emphasizing the effort she puts into controlling her tics during public appearances. In a candid conversation with Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, the 24-year-old singer revealed that while she strives to suppress her vocal tics in interviews, she allows them to surface once she leaves the room.

According to The Guardian, Eilish was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at the age of 11. She expressed her frustration with the common misunderstandings surrounding the condition, which causes involuntary movements and sounds known as tics. These tics can be triggered by various factors, including stress and excitement.

During the podcast, Eilish described the experience of having to suppress her tics while engaging in conversations, stating that she often feels compelled to hide her symptoms to avoid distracting others. She explained that while she can manage her tics to some extent, the pressure of public scrutiny can make it challenging.

Eilish highlighted the importance of understanding Tourette syndrome, noting that the visible tics are just a part of her daily life. “Imagine those intrusive thoughts, but your mouth has to say them out loud,” she said, illustrating the complexities of living with the condition.

The singer, who gained fame with her hit song “Ocean Eyes,” has achieved remarkable success in her career, including multiple Grammy awards and chart-topping albums. Despite her accomplishments, she continues to advocate for greater awareness and understanding of Tourette syndrome, emphasizing the need for empathy towards those who live with the condition.
