Arabic version: أبي فوكسمان، زعيم يهودي مؤثر، يتوفى عن عمر يناهز 86 عامًا
Abraham “Abe” Foxman, a prominent Jewish American leader and advocate for Israel, has died at the age of 86. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which he led for 28 years, confirmed his passing on Sunday, describing him as an “outspoken, passionate, and tireless advocate for the Jewish people and Israel.” According to Al Jazeera, Foxman was a Holocaust survivor who significantly influenced discussions about Israel and anti-Semitism in the United States for decades.
Foxman joined the ADL in 1965 and served as its national director from 1987 until 2015. Under his stewardship, the organization became one of the most influential advocacy groups in the country, focusing on anti-hate initiatives. ADL Board Chair Nicole Munchnik highlighted Foxman’s role in shaping the “modern liberal era of America,” noting his close relationships with U.S. presidents and world leaders.
Throughout his life, Foxman remained a staunch supporter of Israel, defending its actions during conflicts, including the recent war in Gaza. He articulated his views on social media, asserting that the situation in Gaza, while tragic, did not constitute genocide. He emphasized the need for Israel to ensure humanitarian aid to lessen civilian casualties.
In the weeks leading up to his death, Foxman expressed his support for U.S. military actions against Iran, thanking President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for their efforts. He also raised concerns about the increasing anti-Semitism he perceived across the political spectrum in the United States, particularly criticizing politicians who distanced themselves from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Tributes from leaders in Israel and the U.S. have poured in, with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressing deep sadness over Foxman’s death. President Isaac Herzog of Israel referred to him as a “legendary leader of the Jewish people,” acknowledging his contributions and commitment to strengthening ties between Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.
