A beloved seal known to Mornington Peninsula locals as ‘Sammy’ is believed to have died. According to ABC News, authorities have not confirmed the seal’s identity through DNA testing, but they assert there is a strong likelihood that the deceased seal is indeed Sammy.
The Marine Response Unit from Zoos Victoria was called to a rescue on the Mornington Peninsula on Tuesday, where the seal was found dead. A spokesperson for Zoos Victoria expressed the community’s sorrow, stating, “Unfortunately, we’re unable to confirm that it’s Sammy, only that there is a very strong likelihood that it is. It’s horrible news for the community.” They noted that DNA testing was inconclusive as there was no original sample for comparison. The cause of death remains unclear, with results from ongoing tests expected in the coming weeks.
Sammy had recently gained notoriety for amusing locals by sunbathing on Point Nepean Road in Dromana, where he delighted motorists and caused temporary traffic delays. Residents, including Carolyn Savage, learned of Sammy’s passing through social media, sharing fond memories of spotting him at various locations, including the boat ramp at Safety Beach.
Local social media reactions reflect the affection felt for Sammy, with many describing him as a “big beautiful boy” who lounged around as if he owned the place. Some community members have even called for a monument to honor the beloved seal. A Facebook page dedicated to Sammy, which has amassed 7,000 followers, expressed the community’s deep connection, stating that the beaches will feel quieter without him.
