The Islamic Charitable Projects Association (ICPA) strongly condemns the deeply disturbing incident that occurred at the Bald Hills Mosque in Brisbane on Sunday 10 May 2026. Worshipers were allegedly threatened by a man who claimed to have an automatic firearm in his vehicle outside the mosque.

The incident has caused significant distress and concern within the Australian Muslim community and represents a serious violation of the sanctity, safety and security in Australia.

According to Australian law and values, no Australian should ever feel unsafe while exercising their right in peace and freedom. This alarming event raises serious concerns regarding the safety and security of individuals and communities across Australia. Such acts undermine Australian values of peaceful coexistence, freedom, and social harmony.

The rise in hate speech and acts of intimidation stand in direct contradiction to these values and risks damaging Australia’s reputation as a civilised and inclusive freedom nation. Attempts to sow division and discord within society will neither resolve economic challenges nor contribute to improving the wellbeing and living standards of Australians.

The ICPA acknowledges the prompt response of the Queensland Police and notes that charges have been laid in relation to this matter. We trust that the court will address the matter appropriately and expect the alleged offender will receive a punishment that is proportionate to the seriousness of his crime and hate-related offences.

We call upon all levels of government, law enforcement agencies, media institutions, and community leaders to take meaningful and coordinated action to address the growing threat posed by hate speech, intimidation, and actions that undermine Australian values, social cohesion, and community safety.
