Arabic version: ترامب يعبر عن شكوكه بشأن إطلاق سراح جيمي لاي بعد محادثات مع الصين
Donald Trump has expressed skepticism regarding the potential release of Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong democracy advocate, following discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. According to The Guardian, Trump mentioned that Xi described Lai’s situation as a “tough one” during their talks.
Lai, the founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February under a security law imposed by Beijing. His family and supporters had hoped that Trump’s diplomatic engagement could facilitate his release. However, Trump indicated that the response he received from Xi was not encouraging.
During a return flight from China, Trump noted, “I did bring it up, but it’s a tougher one for him. He said Jimmy Lai is a ‘tough one’ for him.” He further elaborated in a Fox News interview, stating, “I did not feel optimistic.”
Lai’s daughter, Claire, expressed gratitude for Trump’s efforts, highlighting his reputation for advocating for the unjustly detained. She urged Xi to take action, calling it an opportunity to do the right thing.
Concerns about Lai’s health have intensified, as he has been reported to suffer from various ailments while imprisoned. His family has raised alarms about his deteriorating condition, noting significant weight loss and inadequate living conditions, including solitary confinement without air conditioning in extreme heat. Lai’s case has drawn international attention, especially in the UK, where he is viewed as a victim of political repression following Hong Kong’s handover to China in 1997.
