According to BBC News,

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was booed by students as he spoke about the rise of artificial intelligence during his speech at University of Arizona’s graduation ceremony, underscoring growing anxiety over AI’s impact on jobs.

Schmidt acknowledged the students’ fears, stating that they were ‘rational’ and encouraged them to adapt to the evolving technology. He emphasized that AI will significantly influence the future and urged graduates to consider how they could shape this technology moving forward.

Schmidt’s experience is not unique; other speakers have also encountered similar backlash. Gloria Caulfield, a real estate executive, was booed at the University of Central Florida when she referred to AI as the next industrial revolution. At Middle Tennessee State University, CEO Scott Borchetta faced jeers after discussing AI, to which he advised graduates to ‘deal with it.’

The hostility towards discussions of AI reflects a broader unease on college campuses. A recent poll indicates that many students perceive AI as a threat to their futures and an impediment to their educational development. Many are reconsidering their career paths, shifting away from entry-level tech roles towards fields that emphasize critical thinking and human interaction.

Research from the Pew Research Center reveals that 50% of American adults are ‘more concerned than excited’ about the increasing presence of AI in everyday life. As AI technology advances, fears about job automation and workforce changes continue to grow among young Americans.
