The Trump administration has announced the creation of a $1.7 billion fund aimed at compensating allies whom former President Donald Trump claims were wrongfully targeted by the government. This unprecedented move follows Trump’s decision to withdraw a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). According to The Guardian, the fund is part of a settlement agreement with the IRS.

The Department of Justice has stated that the fund, described as an “anti-weaponization” initiative, will be established within 60 days. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the importance of ensuring that government machinery is not used against any American. The fund will be overseen by five commissioners, four appointed by the attorney general and one in consultation with congressional leadership.

Critics, including Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, have condemned the fund as a potential misuse of taxpayer dollars. Wyden labeled the move a “stunning act of corruption,” arguing that it could serve as a slush fund for politically motivated actions.

In addition to establishing the fund, Trump will drop claims for monetary damages related to a raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate and the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. This decision comes as Trump faces declining approval ratings, which have reached their lowest point in his second term, as public dissatisfaction over ongoing economic issues and the conflict in Iran continues.
