Arabic version: منظمة حقوق الإنسان تُبلغ عن تعذيب رجل بريطاني في دبي
A British national, Ryan Pepper, has reportedly been tortured during his detention in Dubai for more than seven months, according to the human rights organization Detained in Dubai. The 27-year-old from Ashford in Kent has allegedly faced beatings, threats, and psychological abuse while held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Pepper’s situation has raised serious concerns as he has been hospitalized due to injuries believed to be linked to assaults in custody. His family expressed fears for his life, stating that he was held in isolation for about 20 days during his detention, which began on 3 November 2022.
In handwritten notes smuggled from his detention facility, Pepper described a harrowing environment where “everyone was beaten up.” The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comments regarding his treatment. Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is supporting Pepper and is in contact with his family.
An FCDO spokesperson emphasized that the UK government takes allegations of torture and mistreatment extremely seriously and is actively raising the case with local authorities. Detained in Dubai has highlighted broader concerns regarding the treatment of British nationals in UAE custody, calling for urgent action on the matter. According to BBC News, the situation continues to evolve as advocacy for Pepper’s rights intensifies.
