According to BBC News,

A 13-year-old girl has died after going missing in a river near a North Yorkshire beauty spot. The teenager was reported missing at 18:30 BST on Sunday at the River Wharfe, near Burnsall, in the Yorkshire Dales. She was found a short time later and rescued from the water, but despite efforts from members of the public and being taken to hospital in an air ambulance, North Yorkshire Police confirmed she had later died.

The incident is part of a concerning trend, with at least 15 water-related fatalities reported during the recent heatwave. Burnsall, a village in Wharfedale known for outdoor activities, has been shaken by this tragedy. MP for Skipton and Ripon, Julian Smith, expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “This morning all my thoughts, prayers and wishes are with the family of the young girl who died in Burnsall yesterday.”

Edwin Williams, chairman of Burnsall Parish Council, noted that the community is in shock over the loss, marking it as the second such tragedy in two years. “The Wharfe provides so much pleasure for many and yet again is the scene of heartbreak,” he remarked. Local villagers have begun paying tribute to the young girl at the site, with plans for a memorial service in her honor.

In related news, emergency services are also engaged in the search for an 11-year-old boy missing in the River Don in South Yorkshire. Search efforts resumed at first light on Monday, following reports that the boy had entered the water but had not emerged. South Yorkshire Police have urged the public to stay clear of the area to facilitate the ongoing search operations.
