According to ABC News, former Sydney high school teacher Tayla Lee Brailey has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for sexual offences involving two male students under her care.
Brailey appeared in Parramatta District Court after pleading guilty to four charges connected to sex acts involving the two teenage students, including using a carriage service to transmit and access child abuse material. The offences involving the students occurred in 2024, ABC News reported.
Judge Elizabeth Ryan said Brailey’s breach of the teacher-student relationship required a custodial sentence. The judge said offences of this kind harmed the trust that must exist between families and the education system, and that no penalty other than imprisonment was appropriate.
Brailey was first arrested at a Sydney school in August 2024 on charges relating to sexual touching and sexual intercourse with a person under special care. After being released on bail, she was arrested again less than two weeks later and charged with multiple sex offences relating to a second teenage student. The court heard that she had initiated contact with one of the teenagers.
Judge Ryan read a victim impact statement in which one teenager described shame, lack of sleep and flashbacks, and said he had left high school before finishing year 12. The court also heard that Brailey, 32, had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was likely experiencing a manic episode at the time of the offending. She will be eligible for parole on April 24, 2027, and was ordered onto the NSW Police child protection register for 15 years.
