This announcement comes after his family disclosed he was battling cancer in January, following hospital evaluations for ongoing abdominal symptoms. The 75-year-old has been undergoing treatment in recent months, with the football community rallying around him during this challenging time.
In a recent public appearance at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle, Keegan received an emotional standing ovation. He recounted how a car accident led to the discovery of his cancer during a scan. Keegan shared that he met with a specialist who informed him about a new treatment with a 33% success rate. Despite the grim prognosis, he expressed gratitude for still being present and fighting the disease.
Keegan’s illustrious career includes playing for clubs such as Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, and Newcastle, as well as managing teams like Newcastle and England. He is revered as a transformational figure in Newcastle United’s history, known for leading the club during its competitive peak in the 1990s. Current head coach Eddie Howe has acknowledged Keegan’s influence, reaching out for insights when he took over the management role in 2021.
