According to Al Jazeera, the Iranian Red Crescent Society has asked the International Criminal Court to investigate a United States missile attack that struck a wedding party in Kuhestak, a southern town, killing at least four people and injuring dozens.

In a letter to the court on Wednesday, the humanitarian group called for “an independent, impartial, thorough, and effective investigation”, citing the “civilian character of the location”. It said the attack could amount to a war crime under international law.

The strike occurred at 9:30pm local time on Tuesday. The Red Crescent said four people were killed — two women and two children aged four and 16 — and 67 were wounded. It said the death toll could rise because some of those injured were in critical condition. An Iranian official said most of the wounded were women and children.

US Central Command said it was aware of Iranian media reports about the attack but said it does not target civilians. Iran’s Foreign Ministry rejected that statement. Iran’s UN envoy, Gholamhossein Darzi, urged the Security Council to denounce the attack, calling the targeting and killing of civilians, including children, a grave violation of international humanitarian law.

Neither the US nor Iran is a party to the ICC’s Rome Statute, so the court does not automatically have jurisdiction over either country. The strike came during US attacks on Iranian coastal areas near the blockaded Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Ministry of Health said Tuesday’s strikes killed at least 18 people and wounded 142.
