According to BBC News,
AI giant Anthropic has said it plans to become a public company in the US. The company behind the popular chatbot Claude said on Monday it had filed confidential paperwork with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in order to make an initial public offering (IPO) this year. Specific details regarding the share price and number of shares offered have not yet been disclosed.
Founded just five years ago by chief executive Dario Amodei and a handful of other executives, Anthropic is known for its popular chatbot, Claude. The company recently raised money from private investors that valued the company at more than $965 billion, surpassing the valuation of OpenAI, which most recently was valued by private investors at $852 billion. This valuation reflects expectations of future growth and positions Anthropic as a significant player in the AI sector.
Anthropic’s IPO plans coincide with those of SpaceX, potentially indicating a strong investor interest in AI firms. Industry experts suggest that the listings of both companies could serve as benchmarks for evaluating the market value of generative AI technologies. Troy Hooper, a leader of equity capital markets at Mergermarket, emphasized that the first company to go public could set a standard for how investors view AI companies.
The upcoming IPO is expected to attract intense scrutiny, with analysts predicting it to be one of the most closely watched public offerings in tech history. Harrison Rolfes, a research analyst at Pitchbook, highlighted that Anthropic’s IPO, alongside SpaceX’s, represents a significant concentration of pre-IPO capital entering the market.
Despite facing challenges, including an ongoing legal dispute with the US Department of Defense over contractual terms related to AI usage, Anthropic has reported strong sales growth and anticipates profitability in the first half of this year. This positive outlook comes even as its competitors, SpaceX and OpenAI, have yet to achieve profitability.
