Arabic version: بيريتيني وأوجر-ألياسيم يتقدمان إلى ربع نهائي بطولة فرنسا المفتوحة
According to BBC News,
Matteo Berrettini expressed his joy for reaching the Grand Slam quarter-finals for the first time in almost four years, describing tennis as the “love of my life.” Berrettini triumphed over Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6). This victory sets him up for a last-eight clash against Frances Tiafoe or Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian, who reached a career-high world number six in 2022, has faced numerous injuries and currently stands at 105th in the rankings.
Berrettini’s last appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final was during the 2022 US Open. He has missed six of the subsequent 13 major tournaments due to injury, making this return particularly significant. “There were moments where it was really tough to come back and play,” he shared, reflecting on his journey back to form. His recent performance included a marathon match where he saved two match points, indicating he may have overcome his injury challenges.
Felix Auger-Aliassime also progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Alejandro Tabilo with a score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. The Canadian, a two-time US Open semi-finalist, utilized his experience to manage the match effectively. Despite Tabilo having a potentially advantageous position as a fresher competitor, Auger-Aliassime broke early and maintained control throughout the match, especially in the second set when he faced a challenge.
Auger-Aliassime, who has never previously gone beyond the third round at Roland Garros, expressed his excitement, saying, “Since I was 12 or 13 it has always been a dream for me to get this far.” He will face 10th seed Flavio Cobolli in the next round, who reached the quarter-finals after a hard-fought victory over Zachary Svajda. Cobolli, who managed to win despite a strong comeback from Svajda, noted that “the match is never done,” emphasizing the unpredictable nature of tennis.
