Farmers in South Australia are rapidly acquiring CCTV cameras to safeguard their diesel supplies due to rising concerns about fuel theft. According to ABC News, the demand for these security systems has surged by 300 percent since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, which has contributed to soaring diesel prices.

Dale Farley, a farmer in the Murray Mallee of South Australia, has taken significant measures by installing over 20 CCTV cameras across his family’s three properties. He expressed that the installations help monitor any suspicious activities, stating, “It’s something so simple you can do to protect your asset.” Farley noted that the rising costs of fuel and other agricultural inputs have made safeguarding their resources imperative.

Although South Australia Police have not reported a notable increase in fuel theft incidents, they remain concerned that many cases may go unreported. The police have encouraged rural landowners to adopt CCTV and other security measures to help deter potential thieves.

The heightened demand for CCTV systems has prompted a local security business, Smart Automation Solutions, to shift its focus from commercial clients to the agricultural sector. Director Cody Milne reported that inquiries for CCTV installations on farms have dramatically increased, now accounting for 50 percent of their business. Milne highlighted that the investment in security measures is justified, given the potential losses from theft.

Farmers are increasingly aware of the need for security, with many opting for cameras as a preventative measure against theft. Dale Farley mentioned that community awareness plays a crucial role in deterring theft, as word spreads when security systems are installed. He urged the public to consider the struggles faced by farming families and to refrain from targeting them during these challenging economic times.
