Prominent obesity surgeon Dr. Vahid Reza Adib has been suspended from practising medicine as he faces rape charges. The suspension took effect on June 2, 2026, as stated in a notice on the Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO) website. According to ABC News, Dr. Adib is prohibited from practising as a medical practitioner for the duration of the suspension.

The suspension will remain in place until it is set aside by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal or revoked by the Health Ombudsman. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) also indicates that Dr. Adib’s registration is suspended.

Dr. Adib, 65, was in a relationship with former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk when he was charged last month with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty, and one count of sexual assault. He is accused of detaining a woman in her 30s at his Burleigh Heads apartment on the Gold Coast against her will on March 30 and of raping her three times at the property. He has surrendered his passport as a requirement of his bail conditions.

His legal representation, Dan Rogers, stated that Dr. Adib intends to vigorously defend the charges against him. The case has been adjourned until July 7, 2026. Notably, there is no indication of wrongdoing or involvement by Ms. Palaszczuk in this matter.
