In an effort to tackle a severe housing shortage, builders in Quilpie are experimenting with flat-pack homes. This initiative comes as local businesses struggle to operate due to the lack of available housing for staff, particularly affecting the only childcare centre in the town.

According to ABC News, the reopening of the childcare centre at limited capacity has highlighted the ongoing issues caused by insufficient housing. Real estate agent Dannielle Stevenson noted that while there are educators willing to relocate, the lack of housing severely limits childcare availability, creating a domino effect on essential services.

Local builders Heather and Matt Stennett, who moved to Quilpie in 2023, are leading the charge to implement flat-pack construction. They believe this method could reduce costs and construction times, making it easier to build homes in the outback. The Stennetts have already started assembling the first flat-pack home, which arrived from Newcastle.

The flat-pack homes are designed to be assembled on-site with minimal need for additional trades, as kitchens and bathrooms come fully fitted. Builder Daniel Reitsma expressed optimism that this approach could significantly speed up construction and lower costs, countering the challenges of high freight expenses and a shortage of skilled labour.

Quilpie has previously attempted various strategies to alleviate its housing crisis, including a free land scheme aimed at encouraging private construction. However, uptake has been low, and the mayor acknowledged the complexities involved in building in such a remote area. With hopes pinned on the flat-pack homes, local leaders are eager to see if this innovative solution can revitalize the housing market and attract new residents to the vibrant community.
