President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as the acting director of national intelligence (DNI). Pulte, known for his vocal support of Trump and attacks on the president’s political adversaries, will maintain his role overseeing federal housing and mortgage policies.

According to ABC News, Pulte replaces Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned in late May after a tenure marked by disagreements with Trump regarding his foreign policy, particularly concerning Iran. The DNI position, which requires extensive national security expertise, has raised concerns due to Pulte’s lack of experience in this area.

Trump praised Pulte’s capabilities in a social media announcement, claiming he has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets. However, critics, including Senate Intelligence Committee Vice-Chair Mark Warner, have expressed doubt about Pulte’s qualifications, suggesting he was chosen to promote the White House’s narrative rather than provide necessary intelligence.

Democratic leaders have criticized Pulte’s appointment, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer labeling him a “partisan thug” unfit to safeguard national security. Despite the backlash, some within the administration, like Vice-President JD Vance, have defended Pulte, asserting he aligns with the president’s vision for the intelligence community.

Pulte has a controversial background, having been accused of improperly accessing the mortgage records of political opponents. His aggressive political tactics have polarized opinions, even among Trump’s allies, and he has faced scrutiny for his actions at Fannie Mae, including firing ethics watchdogs investigating his conduct. As he takes on his new role, the implications of Pulte’s leadership on U.S. intelligence operations remain to be seen.
