Dadan Hindayana, the former head of an Indonesian government agency responsible for the rollout of President Prabowo Subianto’s enormous free school meals program, has been arrested by the Attorney General’s Office following an investigation into alleged corruption. This arrest comes a day after he was sacked as head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN).
According to ABC News, Hindayana was escorted from the Attorney General’s department in handcuffs, along with two other officials from the agency, and placed into a police van.
Investigators conducted raids at BGN’s headquarters in Jakarta on the same day, signaling a serious crackdown on alleged misappropriation within the program. The Free Nutritious Meals program, locally known as MBG, was a significant election promise of President Prabowo Subianto, helping him storm to power in 2024.
The program, which was budgeted to cost about $30 billion this year, has faced scrutiny over its effectiveness, with reports indicating that tens of thousands of children may have suffered from food poisoning linked to the meals provided.
