Iran’s football squad has handed their passports to the United States embassy in Turkiye for visas, as their participation in the upcoming World Cup remains uncertain. Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian football federation, confirmed this development, stating that the team is following FIFA’s instructions.

According to Al Jazeera, the submission of passports is crucial as the Iranian team prepares for their upcoming matches in the tournament. The team is scheduled to travel from Turkiye to Spain before heading to their base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, which has already issued visas to the squad.

Taj mentioned that discussions with FIFA regarding the US visas took place recently, and he expressed optimism about the issuance of the visas. “My assessment is that all visas will be issued in full, and there most likely will not be any problem in this regard,” he stated.

The Iranian squad has shifted their World Cup base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana due to the ongoing geopolitical situation. They are set to open their World Cup campaign with matches against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle. Iran concluded their pre-World Cup preparations with a 2-0 victory over Mali in a friendly match.
