Arabic version: زيلينسكي يشارك القادة الأوروبيين في محادثات لتعزيز الأمن
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in the UK for discussions with key European leaders. The meeting, hosted by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street, also includes French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. These leaders represent the E3 group, which has been a strong ally for Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia. The UK and France are leading efforts to establish security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any future peace process. According to BBC News, Zelensky’s visit comes as US President Donald Trump’s focus has shifted to the war with Iran.
During his arrival, Zelensky indicated that the primary agenda would focus on Ukraine’s defense, enhancing cooperation for European air defense, and discussing diplomatic prospects. He emphasized the importance of Europe being involved in negotiations and maintaining strength.
Zelensky’s visit follows a recent escalation in hostilities, including a drone strike on a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Chornobyl nuclear plant, which he condemned as a “vile” attack. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and radiation levels remained stable after a fire was extinguished. However, the attack was characterized as a serious threat to nuclear safety by Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear operator, Enerhoatom.
In addition, Russian strikes have intensified in the Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in casualties among civilians. Over the weekend, at least three people were reported killed in a Russian attack on a village outside Zaporizhzhia, which has faced relentless bombardment.
As tensions escalate, Zelensky has called for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Putin has dismissed the idea, stating there is no point in meeting and reiterating that he will only end the war when Russia’s objectives are achieved.
