A family of four were left “devastated” after their home was destroyed in a powerful fire south of Wollongong overnight. According to ABC News, emergency services were called to Helen Street in Warilla at about 9pm on Sunday evening. When firefighters arrived, they found the single-storey house “spectacularly” alight, with the fire having spread rapidly from outdoor furniture to the roof.
The family managed to self-evacuate, and the woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a minor burn to her arm. Fire and Rescue Shellharbour Station Commander Darin Sullivan described the situation as complex, noting that fallen powerlines and a venting gas cylinder posed additional challenges for the firefighting crews.
Firefighters spent one hour bringing the fire under control and almost three more fully extinguishing the blaze. Commander Sullivan emphasized the speed at which the fire spread, stating that it took hold of the entire house in just six minutes. Fortunately, no one was taken to hospital, but the family lost everything in the fire.
In the wake of the disaster, the local community has rallied to support the affected family. An online fundraiser initiated by the homeowner’s brother Jesse Thompson has raised several thousand dollars within hours. Local pubs, including the Warilla Hotel and the Lake Illawarra Hotel, have also launched donation drives for clothing, toys, and other essentials to help the family rebuild their lives.
Commander Sullivan urged residents to remain vigilant, especially with winter approaching, reminding them to check smoke alarms and be cautious with heating devices. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, initial assessments indicate it does not appear to be deliberate or suspicious.
