Women desperate to become parents are being harassed for sex and offered cheap, illegal sperm samples online. According to BBC News, the UK’s fertility regulator has warned that women are at risk of being exploited by predatory donors.
A recent investigation revealed that women unable to access formal fertility treatment are increasingly seeking options on social media platforms, leading to a burgeoning unregulated market. Some individuals are even using platforms likened to “Tinder for sperm” to connect with potential donors. In one instance, the investigation paid £100 for a next-day delivery sperm sample from a man who advertised his “baby batter” online, which was found to be non-viable upon testing.
The investigation highlighted the ease of accessing sperm online, with numerous men offering their services without any verification or health checks. One prolific donor, identified as Robert Albon, was publicly named by a family court judge to caution against the dangers of unregulated sperm donation. Albon has claimed to have fathered 180 children worldwide through both sexual intercourse and artificial insemination.
Women seeking these services often report being pressured into sexual encounters or receiving unsolicited messages from donors. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has classified unregulated donation as a criminal offense in the UK, emphasizing that while using unregulated donors is not illegal for recipients, the actions of the donors may be.
Some couples, like Tianna and her wife Nikki from south Wales, have turned to unregulated donations after being ineligible for NHS funding. They expressed awareness of the risks involved and took precautions to ensure their safety, including creating informal agreements with their chosen donor. However, they acknowledged that such arrangements do not provide legal protection against potential future claims for parental rights.
The HFEA has referred several prolific unregulated donors to law enforcement and continues to educate the public on the risks associated with unregulated sperm donation. The authority stresses the importance of using licensed clinics for any gamete-related procedures to ensure safety and compliance with the law.
